Buying a new car is an exciting time. You’ve probably spent time thinking about what make and model you’d like, which color you will pick, and which options you’ll add to make your new car your own. One thing you might not have been as excited about is actually paying for that new car! How you budget for and finance a new vehicle can make or break your monthly budget. To help make your purchase go smoothly at your Chapman, Arizona dealership, here are some tips from the financial experts:

Know your budget
Financial expert Suze Orman recommends taking into account all costs associated with vehicle ownership before heading to the dealership. Consider gas, insurance, maintenance and repairs in addition to the monthly car payment.

Dave Ramsey, another well-known financial expert, suggests that the sum total of all your vehicles (cars, jet skis, motorcycles, etc) should not exceed 50% of your annual income. Because vehicles depreciate at a relatively fast rate, this practice keeps your budget in check.

Get pre-approved
Research available lenders and their rates. Your local bank or credit union likely offers auto loans. This doesn’t require you to borrow from them, but does give you options and knowledge of the rate market.

Pick the right vehicle
Choosing a certified pre-owned car is a great way for first-time buyers to get a great value. These cars are inspected and usually have limited warranties, so you know you’re getting a vehicle that performs well. Because the price point is lower on used cars, loans may be easier for the first time buyer to obtain. Knowing the car’s history also helps you more accurately plan for maintenance and repair costs.

Take a friend
Bringing a sidekick along to the dealership helps keep you focused on what you want. That friend can also help remember details of your discussion with the dealer so you can make the best decision for you.

Have cash in hand
To get the best rate on a car loan, you’ll want to have at least a 20% down payment. This allows you to qualify for a secured loan. Lenders like to see you “put your money where your mouth is” and when you have a larger down payment, they see it as a sign that you are less likely to default on your loan. If you’re planning on purchasing a used car and can pay 100% in cash, you may be able to negotiate a better deal.

Watch loan length
Some buyers finance vehicles for six, seven, even eight years. This puts buyers in a better place financially month-to-month, but draws the lower payments out over the long term. Orman suggests keeping loan length to three years or less to be sure you can truly afford that vehicle.

At Chapman Arizona, we’re eager to help you find the right new or certified pre-owned car that fits your lifestyle and your budget!
