Chapman Arizona brands such as GM, Hyundai, Chrysler and Ford may have come up with a solution for parents to locate their teenage son or daughter who’s driving the family car. The new technology that all three brands, along with others, have created can alert parents when the car is out too late, straying too far from home, or is exceeding the posted speed limit signs.

The systems, OnStar Family Link from GM, Hyundai Blue Link, EVTS by Chrysler and Ford MyKey, each allow somewhat different settings. Essentially the technology allows parents to determine the vehicles location, set up alerts when the vehicle is outside set boundaries, or when the car hits a certain speed, and even has the ability to block incoming calls and texts.

Hyundai Blue Link, is available on every Hyundai vehicle and includes Geo-Fence, Curfew Alert, and Speed Alert. Parents will receive an alert via email, text message, or automated phone call whenever the vehicle obstructs the set limitations on the above features.

Ford’s MyKey permits parents to set restrictions for a top speed, deactivate the audio system until all passengers are buckled up, limit audio volume, and block adult content on satellite radio. Specific to the 2012 Ford Explorer, parents can also block incoming calls and text messages to their teen’s cell phone. Once the transponder-equipped key has been programmed, MyKey remembers the settings for that specific key every time it is inserted into the ignition.

The OnStar Family Link system allows parents to do a vehicle locate and set up a vehicle location alert. Parents can customize the specific day, time and frequency of the alerts.

Chrysler Group offers Electronic Vehicle Tracking System (EVTS), a dealer-installed Mopar feature that can be incorporated into all new Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram, SRT and Fiat vehicles, as well as on non-Chrysler Group new cars in Phoenix. EVTS has several plans available, with separate levels of security. The Silver plan includes security fencing options that alerts parents when a driver goes outside the set boundaries or exceeds pre-set speed limit levels. The plan also includes the ability to trace where the vehicle has gone.
